Code Monkey

This is a music video about the life of the common lowlands code monkey. Jonathan Coulton is a singer/songwriter who releases his songs via the Creative Commons license, which enables projects such as this video. Through his “Thing A Week” podcast, Jonathan has put out a clever, creative song like this one every week for a year. Mike Spiff Booth is a Program Manager at Adobe who though this great song really deserved a video. Before you ask, since apes, goblins, and night elf receptionists don’t tend to interact much in the wild, I couldn’t only use captured game footage to make this video. Every frame of this video was composited together by hand using images captured from the WoW Model Viewer, WoW Map Viewer, and the World of Warcraft game itself. No monkeys were harmed in the making of this film. Please visit for more information about my videos, including info about how I make them. The song at the end of the video is “Big Bad World One”, another great Jonathan Coulton song.

The world is full of people who think that it’s only “hard work” if it leads to physical exhaustion. I can only assume they’ve never heard someone refer to a task as hard in the sense it’s intellectually difficult and exhausting. That’s why it’s called to “think hard” about something.

If landscaping in a desert is so hard, you might want to rethink your career choices mate.

Gratz! Your trolling was successful! You’ve Lost 10 friends, and have Gained 20 Enemies!

  7. Joshua5003 says:

I can imagine landscaping can be very difficult, especially in a place like Vegas. Limited space, and an overall feel. Must be difficult.
However, programming can be very difficult as well, and, I imagine, monotonous.

I love when people that do physical labor all day and hate there jobs try to look down on people that sit at a desk. Sorry that you didn’t go to college so you could make something of yourself.

  9. aqian1018 says:

I think most people can learn basic programming concepts given enough effort. But to be a professional developer, be prepared to spend your entire life learning programming.

  10. 3Sciencenut says:

I doubt you have the mental acuity to understand even the most vague basics of programming.

  11. cbacon911 says:

It’s a lot harder than you think it is, honestly. It’s not physically intensive, no. But if you think physical labor is the only thing that’s hard in this life, I feel sorry for you.

If it’s that easy, why aren’t you doing it instead of landscaping? Oh, your name is ImKindaOpinonated, sorry Mr. Troll, I’ll go back to my desk.

Words have contextually different meanings, you know? Things can be hard in more than one way, example: it’s hard to get shit through your head! vs it’s hard work.
